Firefly

Firefly….

Standing quietly, the warmth of the summer night is keeping my company.

A wish arises from within, a yearning to have seen but one more Firefly this sun-filled season.

The summer is sweet but all too short.  These enchanting creatures dance and swirl amongst the trees and grasses, their visits are never quite long enough.

A twinge of sadness rested upon me.  With an effort to make friends with acceptance, I muster a smile and make peace to wait another year.  The dark of night and the sounds of the near silence were healing and soulfully satisfying.

Not but a breath later, the forest, expressed by way of magic, gifted a response to my wish. A single Firefly emerged from the grasses at the base of the trees. A child-like energy surged through my entire being.

As though with intention and having a hand in this story, the glowing magical light flew up toward me. They fluttered at my eye level, as if to comfort me, to tend to me.  Gleeful laughter spilled from my mouth.

As tears of joy fell from my eyes and rolled over my cheeks, the Firefly danced away from our meeting place and slowly returned to the forest, quietly as though not to disturb any of the other creatures.

Staring into the night, in a state of sheer exuberance, I remembered to breathe.  As though her wonder wasn’t clear, Mother Earth summoned another treasure.  Hearing the opening & closing of their wingspan, the sound was striking.  The soaring white snow owl flew at my eye level, through the open space before me and then just as they emerged, they disappeared in a moment, into the forest.  Silence. My breath was lost again.

Thank you, Firefly. Thank you, Owl.  Thank you, Trees.  Thank you, Mother Earth.

Bewilderment holds my breath and Mother Earth, my spirit.

Love One Another, Liz
